EMPOWERING WOMEN AND YOUTH FOR INCLUSIVE GOVERNANCE IN DAR ES SALAAM: A RIGHT BASED APPROACH TO INCREASE WOMEN AND YOUTH PARTICIPATION

Introduction:

Welcome to our Annual Report covering the period from March to December 2023, showcasing the impactful strides of our project, "Empowering Women and Youth for Inclusive Governance in Dar es Salaam: A Rights-Based Approach to Increase Participation.

Project Overview:

Our initiative aims to actively involve women and youth in governance, with a human rights focus. This report provides a concise summary of project activities, financial insights, achievements, challenges, and our funding source – the generous support of USD 60,000 from ForumCiv, Eastern and Central Africa.

Activities Conducted (March to December):

April: Workshop at TAMISEMI
Introducing the project to the Ministry of President's Office Regional Administration and Local Government in Dodoma, Tanzania.

May: NGO Sustainability Training
A four-day training session for Envirocare staff on diversifying funding sources and building a sustainable NGO.

July: Sensitization Meeting
A one-day consultative meeting to introduce the project, bringing together 30 stakeholders, including government officials, NGOs, and media personnel.

July: Capacity Building Workshop for Media Representatives
A one-day workshop focused on reporting on governance issues from a human rights perspective.

November: Training for Political Party Youth Leaders
A two-day training to enhance engagement and communication skills for political party youth leaders and university student organization leaders.

December: Learning Exchange Programme in Nairobi, Kenya
Our Project Manager participated in a three-day learning program to enhance our capacity in environmental, human rights, and gender advocacy.

Achievements:

  • Successful training sessions with positive feedback.

  • Government approval for project implementation.

  • Enhanced Envirocare staff capacity in managing diverse funding sources.

  • Improved communication skills among political party youth leaders and university student organization leaders.

  • Insights into various strategies for building and sustaining movements.

Challenges Faced:

  • Journalists' busy schedules affecting workshop attendance.

  • Limited time for in-depth discussions in some workshops.

Recommendations for Future Activities:

  1. Consider extended workshops for comprehensive discussions.

  2. Provide additional support for journalists to balance commitments.

  3. Encourage open dialogue among media representatives and stakeholders.

Remarks:
The project was successfully executed, adhering to the established work schedule with minimal risks encountered.

Conclusion:
Our "Empowering Women and Youth for Inclusive Governance in Dar es Salaam" project, supported by ForumCiv, has made significant strides. Despite challenges, we remain committed to empowering women and youth for a more active role in governance. Stay tuned for more initiatives in the coming months!
